The total annual cost stood at over 20 per cent above the 21st century average, driven by significant earthquakes and &#8220;relentless severe convective storms&#8221;. These natural disasters also caused the highest number of fatalities in a single year since 2010, with the report calculating around 95,000 people lost their lives during natural disasters last year, with earthquakes and heatwaves the biggest cause of death.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, global insurance losses from the disasters studied were almost a third above the 21st century average, reaching $118bn last year, the report found. Earthquakes caused the most economic losses, with those that hit Turkey and Syria last year the most expensive and deadly disasters of 2023, together resulting in economic losses of around $92bn alone, it calculated.<\/p>\n<p>However, severe storms imposed the biggest cost on insurers, with New Zealand, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, and Croatia all recording their costliest weather-related insurance events on record last year. Other expensive events &#8211; which climate change is likely to have made more intense and more likely to occur &#8211; included the $3.5bn losses experienced in Hawaii after devastating wildfires last year. The US along recorded 67 per cent of global insured losses in 2023, according to the Aon.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the report highlights the numerous climate records which were broken last year, which was officially the hottest on record, reaching 1.45C above pre-industrial temperatures.
