The A Bridge for Common Life conference represented a critical opportunity to examine \u201cunified and sustainable mechanisms to stop further needless loss of human life on treacherous routes,\u201d said Amy Pope, the agency\u2019s Director General, who was at the summit. \u201cEven one death is one too many,\u201d she added, calling the latest numbers \u201ca stark reminder that a comprehensive approach that includes safe and regular pathways \u2013 a key strategic pillar for IOM \u2013 is the only solution that will benefit migrants and States alike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Italy is working to strengthen its role as a bridge between Europe and Africa through a model of cooperation, development and equal partnership, IOM said, and the summit is taking place at a time when the number of people presumed to be dead or missing at sea is rising.
