The UK has pledged to invest \u00a3215m in supporting the development of small modular reactors (SMRs), but government policy on the role of a new generation of nuclear project in Great Britain&#8217;s energy mix remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>That is the warning from the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) of MPs today, in a letter to Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Claire Coutinho. The letter comes after an inquiry by the EAC found that while the UK has the potential to become a global leader in the development of SMRs, further clarity is urgently needed on how projects will be delivered if the nascent sector is to play a role in delivering on the government&#8217;s goal of having 24GW of nuclear capacity online by 2050. The EAC suggested that based on current policies the UK could have as little as 12GW of nuclear capacity in place by mid-century.<\/p>\n<p>The government is aiming to fully decarbonise the UK&#8217;s electricity grid by 2035 and has said nuclear energy is expected to play a key role in a zero carbon energy mix, providing support for intermittent renewables on the grid. Ministers are therefore prepared to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in new large scale nuclear and SMR projects. However, upon examining the role of SMRs in the energy transition, the EAC cautioned it is unlikely that SMR projects will be contributing generating capacity to the grid until 2035, noting that the first final investment decision on an SMR project is not expected until 2029.<\/p>\n<p>It added that while the government&#8217;s recently published Civil Nuclear Roadmap suggests as much as 24GW of generating capacity could be provided by 2050 &#8211; featuring fleets of SMRs &#8211; the current timetable for investment decisions suggests the UK could deliver as little as half the forecast generating capacity by mid-century.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence to the Committee also suggested the reactor models under consideration for UK deployment through Great British Nuclear&#8217;s SMR competition were likely to result in a greater amount of waste for storage and reprocessing than previously expected.
