The consumer goods giant yesterday published its first ever review of the climate engagement activities of 27 key industry associations of which it is a member, assessing the trade bodies&#8217; public positions and statements on climate related issues since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The exercise, which was produced for Unilever by advisory firm Volans, found eight of the trade groups surveyed were &#8216;misaligned&#8217; with one or more of Unilever&#8217;s climate policy areas. In a blog post published yesterday, the company&#8217;s chief sustainability officer Rebecca Marmot said it was a &#8220;concern&#8221; industry associations&#8217; positions were out of line with the company&#8217;s own sustainability goals.<\/p>\n<p>However, she added it was &#8220;also a reflection of the reality that in many cases industry associations are juggling competing internal and external pressures, which often results in a &#8216;lowest common denominator&#8217; outcome&#8221;. The review also concluded two-thirds of the trade associations found to be technically aligned with Unilever&#8217;s climate policy positions were not proactively advocating for policies that could tackle climate change, describing these groups as &#8220;passively aligned&#8221; with the company&#8217;s goals.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 18 associations found to be aligned with all of Unilever&#8217;s climate policy positions, eight had no public record of meaningful engagement with governments, while four were found to have lobbied for more effective climate policies. Marmot said the company planned to now engage with its associations to explore the&#8221;practical and realistic actions&#8221; they could take over the next 12 months to drive better alignment with Unilever&#8217;s goals. But she also warned Unilever stood ready to withdraw its membership fees to associations that did not become &#8220;catalysts for positive change&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Marmot said the review was &#8220;just the beginning&#8221; of Unilever&#8217;s efforts to ensure its trade bodies are aligned with its climate priorities. &#8220;Unilever is a member of over 600 industry groups, coalitions and trade bodies,&#8221; she noted. &#8220;While not all of them are relevant to the climate debate, our ambition is to have full alignment from those that matter and we intend to update this review annually, so that we can track our progress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Associations were selected for inclusion in the review based on the importance of the association in shaping climate policy and the firm&#8217;s level of influence within the organisation.
