CDP confirmed 42 per cent of disclosing firms mapped where plastics were produced and used within their value chains in 2023, after a partnership with The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Minderoo Foundation, and WWF enabled the reporting platform to facilitate disclosures on plastics-related data for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>However, only one-in-five disclosing firms were aware of risks associated with their plastic-related activities. Seventy per cent of companies have also not yet mapped the impacts of their plastic-related activities on the environment and human health, while almost two thirds have not set targets for managing plastic-related impacts. CDP warned many firms from high-impact sectors, including food and beverage, retail, and apparel, are very likely to face tangible plastic-related risks such as supply chain disruption, increasing waste management fees, and regulatory restrictions if they fail to take action to curb plastic use and waste.<\/p>\n<p>However, there were some signs these warnings are cutting through. Of the companies not yet taking action, around half plan to take map their plastic-related impacts and set targets within the next two years, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Cole, head of sustainable business at CDP, said the fact 3,000 companies had voluntarily disclosed data on their plastic use was &#8220;an incredibly positive first step&#8221;. &#8220;Our findings show how much actionable data on plastics is needed,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Not just to rapidly boost corporate progress and translate awareness into action, but to assess our global progress toward reducing plastic pollution and its impacts.&#8221; Cole said governments could help accelerate efforts to tackle plastic pollution by including mandatory corporate disclosure requirements in the Global Plastics Treaty that is being negotiated in Ottawa later this month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Governments must seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and create the enabling environment companies need by agreeing an ambitious Global Plastics Treaty, with mandatory corporate disclosure as a core element,&#8221; he argued. As plastic use continues to rapidly increase, our time to effectively limit its most dangerous impacts shrinks.
