According to a report from ZWE, better city-wide waste management programmes, including minimising the use of single-use items and increasing recycling and recovery, can reduce a city\u2019s emissions by 15-20%. There are potential cost savings too, as landfill space becomes scarcer and more expensive, while the carbon footprint of incineration, and the additional taxes it incurs, is increasingly ruling out waste-to-energy as an option.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 500 municipalities across Europe are now working towards certification as a Zero Waste City. It\u2019s a long journey and in order to achieve the first of five stars, cities need to meet the criteria for at least 40 out of 100 separate points, from implementing a waste prevention plan and reuse strategies, to environmental education in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark is now decommissioning 30% of its 26 incinerators, both to improve recycling rates, and cut down emissions associated with incineration.
