In 2022, some 12 million tonnes of metals were lost. The findings don\u2019t take account of batteries from the millions of electric vehicles coming off production lines today, but do consider waste from photovoltaic panels. That stream alone is expected to grow from 600,000 tonnes in 2022, to 2.4 million tonnes by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Increased recycling of e-waste would not only strengthen domestic supply chains for critical raw materials but avoid carbon emissions associated with mining. While far from sufficient, in 2022 the metals that were recycled avoided 52 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent mining emissions. Keeping products in use would both tackle emissions and cut materials demand. That speaks to product design and is tackled by the EU\u2019s ecodesign principles.<\/p>\n<p>Others are working on legislation. The EU has agreed a right to repair for consumers, as well as ecodesign rules to make sure products are designed to be more durable, repairable and recyclable, although neither piece of legislation is yet in force. They await formal approval from the EU\u2019s council, expected in the coming weeks, although member states have up to two years to comply.
