The study reveals 3.9 million fewer business flights were taken last year compared to pre-pandemic levels, as businesses spent \u00a32.9bn less on air travel in 2023 than in 2019 despite real GDP growth of 1.8 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The NEF claims the findings undermine aviation industry claims that increasing the number of flights will drive economic growth as the likes of Luton, Gatwick, and London City Airports seek to expand capacity. The new data represents further evidence of the &#8220;decoupling&#8221; of business air travel and economic growth, according to researchers. The latest analysis also reveals a longer-term decline in business flights market-share, confirming the sector&#8217;s share of the wider commercial aviation market halved between 2013 and 2022.\u00a0Moreover, it chimes with recent figures from the SAP Concur 2023 Global Business Travel Managers Report claiming 98 per cent of travel managers anticipate changes to company travel policies in the next 12 months in keeping with internal and external sustainability goals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aviation industry can see what is happening here, with concern about their impact on the climate growing, they are trying hard to convince people that more air travel is essential to economic growth &#8211; but their analysis is out-of-date,&#8221; said Alex Chapman, senior economist at the NEF. &#8220;Business use of air travel peaked in 2007 and has fallen further since the pandemic. Today, growth causes major damage to our climate while benefiting only a tiny group of airport owners and wealthy frequent flyers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The next UK government should take a fresh look at its approach to travel and tourism and focus on re-invigorating the UK&#8217;s neglected domestic tourism economy and coastal areas and the zero-carbon public transport network which will support them.&#8221; While the move away from air travel for business purposes has in part been driven by environmental concerns, NEF also argued that stronger government action is required to reduce aviation&#8217;s emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Air travel is responsible for around two per cent of the world&#8217;s CO2 emissions and 12 per cent of transportation emissions, according to figures from the US Department of Energy. However, aviation&#8217;s climate impact extends beyond CO2 emissions, with non-CO2 effects such as contrails and nitrogen oxides also known to contribute to global warming.\u00a0Recent polling by More in Common found that 47 per cent of the public see proposals for a frequent flyer levy as &#8220;fair or somewhat fair&#8221; as opposed to just one-in-five respondents who see it as unfair. Business travellers, who are among the most frequent flyers, were more likely to see the policy as fair, with just over half seeing it as &#8220;very or somewhat fair&#8221; compared with 22 per cent who saw it as &#8220;very or somewhat unfair&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>However, the government remains fiercely resistant to calls for policies that may curb flight numbers, recently doubling down on its commitment to rule out the rationing of flights through &#8220;demand management&#8221; measures. NEF&#8217;s analysis lands just a month after the government confirmed long-awaited plans for a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate, which would require all flights taking off in the UK to ensure 10 per cent of their fuel comes from sustainable-certified sources by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Expected to come into effect January next year, the mandate is set to pave the way for a major increase in SAF production capacity in the UK and would see around 1.2 million tonnes of SAF supplied to the UK airline industry each year &#8211; enough to circle the globe 3,000 times.\u00a0 But critics have repeatedly questioned the nascent industry&#8217;s ability to boost production, deliver promised emissions savings, and drive down costs. In related news, Emirates recently took delivery of more than 3,000 metric tonnes of neat SAF blended with conventional jet fuel from Shell Aviation at London Heathrow Airport.
