The proposed 600MW underground hydro pumped storage facility, which is earmarked for construction adjacent to Drax&#8217;s existing Cruachan facility, received development consent from the Scottish Government last year, but the project is yet to reach a final investment decision.<\/p>\n<p>Voith Hydro has now been appointed to produce a series of reports and models to feed into the estimated costs and schedule for construction of the project, which could help to provide back up electricity storage for a UK grid increasingly reliant on intermittent renewables.Steve Marshall, Drax&#8217;s development manager, said increasing the UK&#8217;s pumped hydro storage capacity was critical to enabling more renewable power projects to come online in support of the country&#8217;s energy security and hit net zero targets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A new generation of pumped storage hydro plants will strengthen the UK&#8217;s energy security by enabling more homegrown renewable electricity to come online to power homes and businesses across the country,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Drax&#8217;s plan to build a new plant at Cruachan will support hundreds of jobs and provide a real boost to the Scottish economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Exploratory ground works are already currently underway at the site, with seismic surveys being undertaken to provide crucial data on the proposed site. However, the energy giant continues to insist further progression of the project will not be possible without updated policy and market support mechanisms from the UK government, the lack of which it claims has held back development of new pumped energy storage over the past 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the previous government launched a consultation on plans to introduce a new market mechanism framework, and Drax will be hoping the new Labour government &#8211; which has put planning reform, economic growth and clean power at the top of its priority list &#8211; will push forward with reforms that could help unlock private investment in new pumped hydro storage projects. &#8220;With the project granted development consent from the Scottish Government, we hope the next UK government will continue policy development in this area at pace to enable a new generation of pumped storage plants to come online as possible,&#8221; Marshall said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its plans for a new pumped hydrogen storage facility at the site, Drax is currently also completing an \u00a380m upgrade to the existing plant.
