Migration was once again the story of the European Union\u2019s population growth last year, despite the far right\u2019s sweeping electoral successes across the Continent on an anti-migration platform. There were more deaths than births in the bloc in the year between January 1, 2023 and January 1, 2024, but the losses were outweighed by positive net migration, with the EU\u2019s population rising 1.6 million to 449.2 million people, according to demographic data released by Eurostat on Thursday. Ukrainian refugees fleeing Russia\u2019s invasion were a significant part of the EU\u2019s migratory inflows, Eurostat said.<\/p>\n<p>The demographic spoils were not shared equally among all member countries. Spain (+525,100), Germany (+330,000) and France (+229,000) saw the greatest population growth, while Poland recorded the greatest loss (-132,800), followed by Greece (-16,800) and Hungary (-15,100). The figures show that migration has kept the EU\u2019s overall population from shrinking, even as far-right political parties hostile to migration enjoy a surge in popularity across the continent. Many such parties have made reversing their countries\u2019 demographic decline a key pledge, but have emphasized raising fertility rates and discouraging emigration.<\/p>\n<p>Three countries \u2014 Germany, France and Italy \u2014 together comprise slightly less than half of the EU\u2019s overall population. The EU\u2019s population dropped in 2020 and 2021 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic but has bounced back in the last two years.
