Convened by Planet Tracker, more than 70 investors and their representatives are asking the petrochemical industry to better measure, disclose and respond to risks arising from its climate-related impacts and contribution to the global plastic pollution problem.<\/p>\n<p>On plastics, the letter warns that many oil and gas majors are looking to expand plastic production to maintain profitability as electricity, heating and transport transition away from fossil fuels. It states that petrochemical companies must be wary of expanding production without due care for enhancing waste management systems or properly addressing the lifecycle climate, environment or public health impacts of plastics.<\/p>\n<p>The OECD estimates that, in a business-as-usual scenario, plastic production could triple by 2060. Most of this production (88%) will be of virgin plastics. And three times as much plastic by weight could leak into the environment on land and water. The letter from the investors to petrochemical firms expresses concerns that the sector at large is \u201cnot properly addressing its plastic-related risks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It calls on plastic producers to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transparently disclose their plastic production and the lifecycle impacts of this<\/li>\n<li>Outline plans to transition to more sustainable production methods<\/li>\n<li>Commit to eliminating hazardous chemicals in plastic products<\/li>\n<li>Establish strong governance structures on environmental sustainability, giving senior management and board members financial incentives to deliver on climate and circularity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Legal &amp; General Investment Management (LGIM), ABRDN, WHEB Asset Management and Rockefeller Asset Management are among the letter\u2019s 70+ signatories. WHEB Asset Management\u2019s partner and head of research Seb Beloe said: \u201cThe use and misuse of plastics lies at the heart of the climate and biodiversity crises and is now also understood to directly threaten human health. This statement provides the essential building blocks for how the plastics industry could be part of the solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter also calls on petrochemical companies to advocate for a robust, legally binding international treaty to end plastic pollution. Such a treaty is currently under development by the UN and more than 130 participating countries. The UN is aiming to ratify the treaty by the end of this year, after a final meeting in Korea that is meant to wrap up on 1 December.<\/p>\n<p>Progress to shape the treaty so far has been mixed. Initial basics have been agreed, including the fact that the treaty needs to cover the whole lifecycle rather than just waste management. But nations have bickered over the specifics, such as whether the treaty should set one international time-bound target, or allow national governments to choose.\u00a0An additional intersessional meeting has been tabled for this September to account for slow progress at meetings in Paris in April.
