In a highly competitive jobs market, a company&#8217;s green credentials can increasingly help it to attract the best candidates, according to the results of a new survey released late last week.<\/p>\n<p>The research from recruitment platform Totaljobs found 62 per cent employers have noticed an increase in questions on their sustainability credentials from candidates during the interview process. The latest Hiring Trends Index from Totaljobs, which surveyed 3,000 workers and 1,000 HR decision makers in the UK, revealed how concerns over corporate greenwashing are also deterring growing numbers of jobseekers.Nearly three quarters of workers said they would not apply to work for a company that tried to exaggerate its environmental performance, while 50 per cent admitted scepticism about business&#8217; sustainability efforts.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, 71 per cent of the workforce are interested in working in a green job or for a sustainably-minded employer. &#8220;Integrating authentic Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into a business&#8217;s people strategy is crucial in attracting and retaining talent,&#8221; said Natalie Matalon, chief people officer at The Stepstone Group, the parent company of Totaljobs. &#8220;Our research shows that employees are increasingly looking to work for companies that align with their values and are open to having honest conversations about these during the recruitment process. Therefore, having a strong ESG strategy will ensure your more attractive to potential candidates as well as help retaining current employees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The survey also reveals some of the potential barriers to people applying for green jobs at a time when many green businesses are reporting skills shortages. Nearly three quarters of businesses reported less diversity among applicants for green roles, while nearly a third of workers said they could not afford to take a pay cut to have a green role and 24 per cent said they were concerned they did not have the right skills or experience. The report said these barriers were likely contributing to a situation where 18 per cent of businesses that are hiring for green roles said they are experiencing difficulties filling vacancies.<\/p>\n<p>Recruitment challenges are also being exacerbated by a competitive labour market, with 85 per cent of businesses reporting that they were recruiting in the second quarter.
