Industrial gas supplier Air Liquide is also involved in the development and pilot project, which is taking place in France. A new hydrogen fuel cell HGV is being tested within Coca-Cola\u2019s supply operations near Paris at present. Data will be collected throughout the demonstration to assess the technology\u2019s efficiency and viability for heavy-duty, long-distance transport.<br \/>\nPractical considerations for HGV operators and environmental impacts will also be quantified.<\/p>\n<p>Liquid hydrogen in the fuel cells is used to generate electricity, which is then used to power electric motors.<br \/>\nThe result is a vehicle with no tailpipe emissions. Coca-Cola\u2019s largest European bottler is notably working towards a 2040 net-zero target covering its whole value chain.<\/p>\n<p>As hydrogen has to be manufactured, emissions may well be generated upstream. Most hydrogen produced globally uses fossil fuels at present, but the EU aims to produce 10 million tonnes of hydrogen from renewable electricity by 2030 and import the same level by the end of the decade, too.
