Having a heat pump installed in every house on a street makes &#8220;almost no difference&#8221; to neighbourhood noise levels, even when they are running simultaneously, a new study from Nesta has concluded.<\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to assess the validity of warnings that heat pumps could trigger a rise in noise complaints in built-up areas, the innovation charity commissioned consultancy Apex Acoustics to report on the noise impact resulting from multiple air source heat pumps being installed in terraced and semi-detached housing areas.<\/p>\n<p>The study found multiple air source heat pumps do not typically generate noise levels that would be distinguishable from that of a single air source heat pump installed within MCS guidelines, which dictate a device must not generate a noise louder than 42 decibels within a metre of a neighbour&#8217;s door or window.<\/p>\n<p>The research claimed this remains the case even if the heat pumps generated their top noise levels at full power all at the same time in a neighbourhood with the densest possible terraced housing. For context, the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) claims a quiet library measures around 40 decibels while an &#8220;ordinary spoken conversation&#8221; chimes in at around 60. Installed in line with MCS guidelines, an air source heat pump produces a low hum that is approximately about as loud as a refrigerator and comparable to the average boiler.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Heat pumps are the most efficient way to reduce carbon emissions in people&#8217;s homes, so it&#8217;s reassuring that having one installed in every house in a neighbourhood makes almost no difference to noise levels,&#8221; said Katy King, deputy director of sustainable future at Nesta. &#8220;Every year manufacturers are producing quieter heat pump models and a properly installed unit is already only as audible as the hum of a fridge or the sound of a gas boiler. It&#8217;s concerning that some planning applications have factored in unevidenced worry about noise when it comes to heat pump installations. &#8220;This study shows that even with all the worst-case factors in place, there is little risk of people being able to notice the sounds of multiple heat pumps running alongside each other to heat people&#8217;s houses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study aims to debunk concerns over the noise from heat pumps after a government review in January noted that in some planning applications concerns had been raised about the cumulative noise impact from multiple heat pump installations. The industry has also called on the government to relax planning rules on the distance heat pumps have to be from neighbouring properties, arguing concerns over noise pollution are largely unfounded. Despite concerns over noise, the UK heat pump market is on course for a record-breaking year of installations in 2024, with MCS revealing that there have been 27,000 certified heat pump installations during the first six months of the year &#8211; a year-on-year increase of 45 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Lee, Heat Pump Association chief executive, said the continuing growth in heat pump installations underscored the progress and commitment from the sector in supporting the decarbonisation of heat.
