However, this increase still falls significantly short of the tripling required to stay on track with the 1.5C climate pathway.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ember-climate.org\/insights\/research\/wind-targets-are-achievable-but-fall-short-of-a-tripling\/#supporting-material\"><strong>Report: Global wind capacity to double by 2030, but fall short of 1.5C climate goal<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThe shortfall is even more pronounced when China is excluded from calculations. According to Ember\u2019s latest report on global wind targets, the urgent goal of tripling global renewable energy capacity, pledged by more than 100 nations at COP28 last year, is not on track to be delivered in full.<\/p>\n<p>The report highlights that national strategies and policy documents predict a rise in wind capacity to 2,157gigawatts (GW) by 2030, a 2.4-fold increase from 2022 levels. This figure, however, leaves a substantial gap of 585GW between current targets and the necessary 2,742GW needed for a global tripling.<\/p>\n<p>The shortfall is even more pronounced when China is excluded from calculations. Outside of China, forecasts for other countries fall well below the 2030 targets needed to achieve a global tripling. Of the 51 countries with forecast data and established wind targets, only six are projected to meet or exceed their 2030 wind targets, leaving 45 countries lagging behind. The largest gaps are, concerningly, found in major wind markets such as the US, India and the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Ember\u2019s report findings indicate that although these regions are contributing significantly to wind capacity, their current pace of additions is insufficient to close the gap by 2030. The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC)\u2019s chief executive Ben Backwell said: \u201cThis latest report from Ember shows commendable growth of wind energy around the world. \u201cUnfortunately, we are facing a climate emergency, and the world needs transformational action that delivers on the tripling promise set out at COP28.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, in the US, the gap between forecasted installations and the 2030 target is the largest. The US does not have an explicit national wind target; instead, an implicit target has been derived from a National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) study assessing the impact of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). The non-binding nature of the target is of particular concern as the US elections loom.
