Gerry Liston is a Senior Lawyer with the Global Legal Action Network \u201cOur home is on fire, and we are looking away.\u201d These words from former French President Jacques Chirac, uttered over two decades ago, continue to resonate with disheartening accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>This June, we witnessed the thirteenth consecutive month of record-breaking global temperatures. Each passing month brings increasingly urgent scientific evidence demanding decisive action against climate change. The European Green Deal, while a significant step forward, was marred by setbacks and remains insufficient in terms of urgency and ambition. Legally, its framework may be inadequate as well.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe and the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) have turned to the EU\u2019s courts to challenge the European Commission\u2019s climate targets. Their case aims to scrutinize the legality of the greenhouse gas emissions allocations set for Member States up to 2030 under the Effort Sharing Regulation (ESR).
