Researchers used AI to model waste management in more than 50,000 municipalities around the world, which they said allowed them to predict how much waste was generated globally and what happens to it.<\/p>\n<p>They calculated that 52 million tonnes of plastic products entered the environment in 2020, and that more than two-thirds of the planet\u2019s plastic pollution comes from uncollected rubbish because almost 1.2 billion people \u2013 15% of the global population \u2013 lack access to waste collection services. In 2020, roughly 30 million tonnes of plastic were burned in places that lack environmental controls, which the researchers said led to \u201csubstantial threats to human health\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>India was the largest contributor to plastics pollution at 9.3 million tonnes a year, followed by Nigeria (3.5 million tonnes) and Indonesia (3.4 million tonnes). Improvements in China meant it had slipped to fourth place at 2.8 million tonnes.
