Liberty Recycling Solutions boasts \u201cthe first automated, inert environment recycling solution\u201d for disposable devices: a recycling machine that shreds vapes \u2013 as well as phones and electric vehicle batteries \u2013 with a four-shaft cutting shear in an inert atmosphere so they don\u2019t catch fire.<\/p>\n<p>Liberty\u2019s machine processes vapes so that electrolytes and liquids are \u201cremoved and bottled off\u201d while the other materials \u2013 shredded into 20mm shards \u2013 are vacuum dried. Once processed and dried, the materials remaining are cooled until safe to handle. They then pass via another machine to sort them into metals (cobalt and lithium salts, stainless steel, copper, aluminium), plastics and the \u201cblack mass\u201d from the batteries.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s first machine can handle 10 tonnes of vapes per week (around 400,000 vapes), but it plans to expand and \u201cscale at pace\u201d across Europe with its technology partner Ermafa.
