Greenwashing: Many companies are repeat offenders, study finds.<\/p>\n<p>The oil and gas industry accounted for the most greenwashing incidents. RepRisk identifies greenwashing by examining the overlap between two ESG issue groups: environmental concerns and misleading communication. RepRisk identified 1,841 incidents of misleading communication globally in the past year, with 1,038 cases (56%) involving environmental issues.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 3,868 companies tied to misleading communication, 2,213 (57%) were associated with environmental misrepresentation. This could be a business overstating the positive impact of its operations, products or services; failing to mention any negative impacts; or using vague terms that could mislead consumers. Private companies dominated the list, comprising 70% of greenwashing cases.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis found that 30% of last year\u2019s offenders continued to mislead consumers with their environmental claims this year. As per the report, the overall severity of greenwashing cases has increased globally by 30% year-over-year, with high-severity cases involving intentional and systematic ESG violations that lead to environmental harm or corporate penalties.<\/p>\n<p>RepRisk\u2019s chief executive Dr Philipp Aeby said: \u201cStakeholders are more aware of greenwashing risk than ever before. \u201cWhile regulators have successfully pushed forward legislation to deter greenwashing, the risk will keep evolving as new forms emerge, leaving companies open to reputational damage which impacts their bottom line. Greenwashing is often driven by corporate narratives. To uncover it, investors and companies should rely on what external sources reveal about these claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geographically, Europe and North America reported the highest levels of greenwashing incidents, followed by Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the report highlights that Europe saw a significant reduction in cases this year. Countries such as the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Spain and China also reported annual declines in greenwashing incidents, largely driven by regulatory pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The US, however, experienced a reversal of its previous decline, with a year-over-year increase of nearly 6% in greenwashing cases. This follows a 10% decline in the previous year. High-severity incidents in the US surged by 114% compared to 2023, while low and medium-severity cases decreased by 34% and more than 15%, respectively. The repeat offender rate in the US stands at 42%, considerably higher than the global average of 30%.<\/p>\n<p>Sectorally, the oil and gas industry accounted for the most greenwashing incidents, followed by the food and beverage sector, and then banking and financial services.The banking and financial services sector, however, saw the largest year-over-year decline at nearly 27%, with retail, personal and household goods also dropping by more than 25%.
