It has confirmed that clean energy and advanced manufacturing will be key strategic focus areas. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and Chancellor Rachel Reeves provided a first glimpse of the industrial strategy on Sunday (13 October), ahead of Monday\u2019s International Investor Summit.<\/p>\n<p>They confirmed that its focus industries will be advanced manufacturing; clean energy industries, creative industries; defence; digital and technologies; financial services; life sciences; and professional and business services. These are all \u201cgrowth-driving\u201d sectors, the Government stated, noting that the UK has shown some leadership in these fields already and could advance its status as a global leader in the future. Reynolds stated his intention to develop and deliver a \u201cpro-worker, pro-business plan which will see investors and workers alike get the security and stability they need to succeed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses are being asked to respond to the Industrial Strategy Green Paper once it is released on Monday. This will inform the final strategy ahead of its publication in the first half of 2025. Other organisations including investors, unions and industry bodies are also being encouraged to respond. Make UK\u2019s chief executive Stephen Phipson said it is important for industry to stop \u201cfearing the constant chop and change in policy we have seen over the last decade or so\u201d to enable a longer-term focus.<\/p>\n<p>The UK Government has also introduced an interim Industrial Strategy Advisory Council as it seeks to implement legislation that will give a permanent Council statutory footing. Microsoft UK\u2019s chief executive Clare Barclay has been selected to chair the Council, which will meet for the first time within a matter of weeks. Barclay said: \u201cI will ensure the Council provides a clear and strong voice on behalf of business, nations, regions, and trade unions, as we invest for the future to ensure that our prosperity is underpinned by robust growth in key sectors right across the country. \u201cWhilst we fully embrace the industries of today, we must also have a clear plan for future growth, and the Advisory Council will play a central role in shaping and delivering this plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK Government is further working to implement a new advisory body on supply chains for British industry. The UK Government has not comprehensively updated its industrial strategy since enshrining the 2050 net-zero target in law five years ago. The last full update was in 2017.
