Secretary of State Ed Miliband requested that the CCC offer its recommendations on what the UK\u2019s mid to long-term decarbonisation targets should be, due to the work the Committee is currently doing on the Seventh Carbon Budget.<\/p>\n<p>The CCC has recommended that the UK target an 81% reduction by 2035 compared to 1990 levels. Earlier this year, the Department for Energy Security and Net-Zero (DESNZ) confirmed that national emissions have halved since 1990. The 81% recommendation is a slight increase on what the UK is targeting under its Sixth Carbon Budget, which is also set for 2035. In 2021, the UK Government legislated a target to reduce emissions by 78% by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Piers Forster, interim Chair of the Climate Change Committee, said: \u201cWith climate damages already felt around the world, targeting an 81% emissions reduction by 2035 sets the right level of ambition. Our analysis shows this can be achieved in a way that benefits jobs and the economy, provided we hit the country\u2019s 2030 target \u2013 set in line with the CCC\u2019s advice in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe technologies needed to achieve it are available, at a competitive price, today. Investment in low carbon technologies \u2013 electric vehicles, heat pumps, and renewables \u2013 needs to come now for this target to be achievable. Businesses will start to invest when they have confidence in what the Government\u2019s long term policy plans are. We need to see the Government\u2019s commitment to climate reflected in the upcoming Budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than any commitment, what we really need is action. I have no doubt that the United Kingdom can once again be a leader on the international stage \u2013 in both deeds and words.\u201d The UK\u2019s existing commitment to the Paris Agreement has seen it target a 68% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
