In a report released today (14 November), the charity questions the transparency, sustainability and environmental impact of these schemes, which some negotiators view as a potential answer to offset the increasing level of corporate plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p>Plastic credit schemes allow companies to \u2018offset\u2019 plastic pollution by investing in projects that manage, recycle, or collect plastic waste. Many projects operate in low-income regions where waste management infrastructure is limited, aiming to channel funds into local waste handling. However, Fauna &amp; Flora\u2019s commissioned study, conducted by Eunomia, reveals that these programmes often fail to deliver real environmental benefits and may worsen pollution and emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The report highlights issues with transparency and effectiveness across existing plastic credit programmes, raising concerns about how collected waste is processed. Eunomia\u2019s findings reveal that in some schemes, up to 50% of plastic credits are issued for waste that is burned in the open or processed in waste-to-energy facilities. Open burning releases pollutants, including microplastics and carbon emissions, negating the intended positive impact on the climate and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>Another point of criticism is the lack of consistent standards governing plastic credit schemes. Some projects recycle plastic using processes that, while cost-effective, are more carbon-intensive, which the report warns may increase overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Fauna &amp; Flora report also raises concerns about the social sustainability of plastic credit schemes.<\/p>\n<p>The projects are often small-scale and temporary, creating inconsistent income for waste management workers, who frequently face low pay, delayed wages and difficult working conditions.
