The proposed change makes the UK one of the first major economies to phase out new coal mining projects as it moves to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>The Government confirmed the decision today (14 November), stating that the legislation will be introduced as soon as possible. The ban is part of the UK\u2019s strategy to cut carbon emissions, particularly from coal, which remains a major source of CO2 emissions worldwide.However, there will be some exceptions to the ban, including cases where safety or environmental restoration is required. An exemption is also expected to protect the rights of \u201cfreeminers\u201d in the Forest of Dean, who have historic rights to mine small amounts of coal for personal use.<\/p>\n<p>For workers affected by the decline of coal, the Government has arranged redundancy packages, retraining, and transfers to new roles. Additionally, \u00a31.5bn will be distributed to the pension schemes of 120,000 former mineworkers. The UK\u2019s move away from coal has been underway for several years. In October, Britain became the first major economy to close its last coal-fired power station, Ratcliffe on Soar, marking the end of coal-based electricity generation. Coal\u2019s share of the UK\u2019s electricity generation has dropped from 40% in 2012 to zero.<\/p>\n<p>Energy Minister Michael Shanks said: \u201cCoal mining powered this country for over 140 years and we owe a huge debt to workers who kept the lights on for homes and businesses across the country. \u201cNow the UK is in prime position to lead the way in phasing out coal power around the world, which remains the single largest contributor to global emissions. \u201cBy consigning coal power to the past, we can pave the way for a clean, secure energy system that will protect billpayers and create a new generation of skilled workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s decision to ban new coal mines is part of its strategy to reduce carbon emissions and become a leader in clean energy. The Government is focusing on technologies like carbon capture and hydrogen to drive its energy future. These investments aim to meet climate targets and create jobs, especially in areas once dependent on coal. A recent report from the National Energy System Operator (NESO) confirmed that achieving a clean power grid by 2030 is possible and could lower electricity costs and improve energy security.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the coal mine ban, the Government, elected this July, has reversed the onshore wind ban in England, approved new solar projects, and committed to expanding offshore wind and hydrogen production.The Government has also launched the Office for Clean Energy Jobs to help workers transition into the renewable energy sector. It has promised \u00a321.7bn for carbon capture projects in the North West and North East of England, which are expected to create thousands of jobs.
