This is according to PwC’s fifth ‘Global State of Climate Tech’ report, which tracks private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) investment across more than 12,000 startups and 52,000 deals worth more than £475bn, as well as angel investors and government bodies. It does not include debt funding, asset purchases or exit deals such as IPOs.

The report found that UK investors committed £2.4bn to domestic climate tech firms, representing a 7% rise in investment volume. A major part of this growth has been attributed to the surge in climate solutions that incorporate artificial intelligence (AI). Investment in UK-based AI climate tech firms saw a 128% increase, rising from £440m in 2023 to £1.01bn in 2024. As a result, UK-based companies now account for 22% of global investments in AI-related climate tech, highlighting the UK’s emerging leadership in this transformative sector.

The key areas within AI climate tech attracting the most investment include autonomous vehicles, followed by industrial applications such as smart homes, energy solutions, and agriculture, with IT and financial services also receiving significant funding. PwC UK’s sustainability partner Dan Dowling said: “The UK has defied the global decline in climate tech investment with a 24% increase in funding pouring into the market.

“The significant capital flowing into UK-based AI climate tech firms further underscores the strength of this burgeoning sector and the UK’s position as a leading destination for climate-focused innovation.” Despite the strong performance in the UK, global climate tech investment has slowed considerably. Total global investment in climate tech dropped to £44bn in 2024, from £62bn in 2023.

The report highlights that this decline is part of a broader contraction in the venture capital and private equity markets, where overall funding dropped from £631bn to £531bn. As a result, the share of climate tech in total VC and PE investment fell from 9.9% to 8.3%, indicating that investors are prioritising other sectors due to tougher economic conditions and greater uncertainty in the market.

Within the global climate tech landscape, however, certain areas are still seeing notable growth. Investments in AI-powered climate solutions have surged, with these solutions now accounting for 14.6% of all climate tech investments in 2024, up from 7.5% in 2023. Additionally, climate adaptation and resilience technologies are increasingly attracting investor interest. In fact, 28% of all climate tech deals this year have focused on technologies aimed at improving resiliency to climate change impacts, such as extreme weather events and flooding. Energy-related technologies also continue to be a focal point for investment, with energy startups capturing 35% of climate tech funding in the first three quarters of 2024, up from 30% in 2023.

However, the report highlights a concerning trend: sectors with the largest emissions, such as industry, food, agriculture, and land use and the built environment, continue to receive disproportionately low levels of investment relative to their emissions reduction potential. For instance, while industry accounts for 34% of global emissions, it has attracted just 8% of climate tech funding. Similarly, agriculture and land use (responsible for 22% of emissions) received only 8% of funding, and the built environment (16% of emissions) received just 4%. This disparity underscores a significant gap in climate tech financing, where high-emission sectors—critical to achieving global emissions reduction targets—remain underfunded.

PwC’s Dowling added: “As the economy recovers, early-stage investors in transformative industries will find opportunities and play a crucial role in achieving net-zero. “However, this journey requires the shared responsibility of private investors, corporates and public actors.”

Source: edie.net

The post UK climate tech investment surges amid global funding decline appeared first on Vastuullisuusuutiset.fi.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

22
17232,1087,579,606,607,608
post-135903","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","tag-climate-tech","tag-investment","tag-uk","tag-vau_viikkokatsaus","tag-vauen","tag-vaufien
["GET
