The SAF mandate is projected to add \u00a31.8bn to the UK economy and create around 10,000 jobs. SAF can be produced from a range of sources including household waste and used cooking oil. Producers often claim that its use reduces carbon emissions by an average of 70% compared to traditional aviation fuel.<\/p>\n<p>The UK SAF mandate requires that 2% of the UK\u2019s total jet fuel demand be met by SAF in 2025, with the percentage increasing to 10% in 2030 and 22% by 2040. The Government is aiming cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from aviation by up to 6.3 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2040, with SAF expected to contribute significantly to this target. By 2030, the UK is expected to use 1.2 million tonnes of SAF annually, enough to fuel the aviation industry for more than 3,000 global flights each year.<\/p>\n<p>It bears noting that international standards currently limit SAF blends in fuel mixes for each flight to 50%. Most flights operating using some SAF use a far smaller proportion. Minister for Aviation Mike Kane said: \u201cFrom this moment on, aviation will be a greener, more sustainable form of travel and today marks a significant milestone for the UK SAF industry. \u201cWith thousands of jobs supporting the UK SAF industry and flying becoming popular than ever, the mandate will help deliver our Plan for Change helping to grow the economy and giving people the freedom to travel in a more sustainable way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to environmental benefits, the SAF mandate is projected to add \u00a31.8bn to the UK economy and create around 10,000 jobs. The Government also plans to introduce a revenue certainty mechanism to attract investment in SAF production plants in the UK, with a consultation due to take place early this year.<\/p>\n<p>A key part of the mandate is the cap on feedstocks used in the hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) process, which converts vegetable oils into jet fuel. There will be no limitations on HEFA supply for the first two years, but the cap will drop to 71% of the UK\u2019s total SAF supply by 2030 and 35% by 2040. Obligations for power-to-liquid fuels will start in 2028, accounting for 3.5% of total jet fuel demand by 2040.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure compliance, the Government has introduced a buy-out mechanism. Fuel suppliers who fail to meet the SAF obligations will face penalties of \u00a34.70 per litre for the primary SAF obligation and \u00a35.00 per litre for the power-to-liquid obligation. This move is part of the broader Jet Zero Strategy, with the UK Government aiming for net-zero emissions from international aviation by 2050, domestic aviation by 2040, and zero-emission airports in England by 2040. The strategy will be reviewed in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>AirportsUK, the trade body for UK airports, has welcomed the implementation of the mandate.
