Tesco will work in partnership with potato supplier Branston and livestock processor ABP to explore and enable the adoption of current and future innovations that cut greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>These could include low carbon fertilisers, alternative fuels, state-of-the-art cold storage, and carbon removal techniques, as well as innovation in other areas including soil health, grazing management, biodiversity assessment and management, and genetic improvements. The aim is to provide a \u201cpractical demonstration of a route to net-zero\u201d for other suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>Tesco\u2019s chief commercial officer Ashwin Prasad said:\u201cWe\u2019ve already been working with farmers to help them reduce their environmental impact, from providing incentives to farmers to measure their carbon footprint to rolling out new innovations like low-carbon fertilisers. \u201cWe\u2019re pleased to be building on this further with our new low-carbon test farms, working with some of our supplier partners to pioneer new approaches to understand the most effective ways to reduce emissions and environmental impact, while continuing to bring the British public great quality food, at a price they can afford.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This announcement came alongside Tesco\u2019s new report, A Greenprint for UK Farming, created alongside Harper Adams University\u2019s School of Sustainable Food and Farming. The report surveyed over 300 farmers to examine the necessary changes and support to align farming with the UK Government\u2019s key environmental goals, as well as understanding farmers\u2019 current experiences around sustainability and farming in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In its report, Tesco noted that decarbonising farms and enhancing ecosystems is vital to ensuring security of supply and protecting prices of goods. The report stated that, by improving innovation and technology within the UK, it will be possible to increase yields and produce vitally needed food, while also protecting the natural world.Its report highlighted severalhallenges facing farmers at present, from extreme conditions and more volatile weather patterns to rising input costs and other economic pressures which make producing affordable, high-quality food a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Uncertainty was a key challenge for many farmers when surveyed on sustainability, with 36% feeling \u2018pessimistic\u2019 when thinking about the future, with a further 37% feeling \u2018unsure\u2019. Moreover, 67% of those surveyed were already seeing the impacts of climate change on their farms.
