Climate change has made the vegetation that is fuelling the Los Angeles fires more vulnerable to burning. This figure comes from AccuWeather, a US-based weather forecasting services firm, which based its assessment on preliminary estimates of the economic impact.<\/p>\n<p>Should the fires continue spreading rapidly into densely populated neighbourhoods, thousands of additional, highly valuable structures may be at risk. This could result in AccuWeather substantially revising its estimate for total damage and economic loss. \u201cThis is already one of the worst wildfires in California history. Should a large number of additional structures be burned in the coming days, it may become the worst wildfire in modern California history based on the number of structures burned and economic loss,\u201d said AccuWeather\u2019s chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter.<\/p>\n<p>The worst-hit areas are between Santa Monica and Malibu, home to some of the most expensive real estate in the country, where median home values exceed $2m. In addition to property damage, the fires are causing negative impacts on tourism and public health due to smoke inhalation. According to climate scientists, climate change has made the vegetation that is fuelling the Los Angeles fires more vulnerable to burning.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, as the global temperature rises, such extreme weather events and disasters are likely to become more common, resulting in serious economic losses every year. As per other estimates from AccuWeather, wildfires in the western US in 2020 caused $130-$150bn in damages, while those in 2021 amounted to $70-$90bn. By comparison, recent hurricanes such as Milton and Helene resulted in damage estimates of $160-$180bn and $225-$250bn, respectively. The 2024 hurricane season as a whole saw losses approaching half a trillion dollars.<\/p>\n<p>As rising temperatures continue to leave their mark on California, new research from the EU\u2019s Earth observation programme, Copernicus, has confirmed that 2024 is officially become the hottest year on record.
