The UN-based Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has concluded that progress across the SDG agenda happened at less than half the rate recorded between 2016 and 2019 in the 2020-2023 period. The report further notes that not all of Europe is progressing at the same rate. Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Austria and Norway lead the pack while the Baltic States and many Central and Eastern European nations lag behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world is increasingly dangerous, unstable, and uncertain. Nearly eighty years after the creation of the UN, war and geopolitical tensions among major powers impact livelihoods everywhere and represent a major setback for sustainable development in Europe and globally,\u201d said SDSN vice president Guillaume Lafortune.<\/p>\n<p>Agreed upon in 2015 and adopted from the start of 2016, the SDG agenda covers an array of environmental, social and economic issues, with 17 overarching goals and 169 supporting targets. Topics include addressing poverty and inequality, improving ecosystems, tackling climate challenges, creating a more circular economy and improving education and healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>The SDGs have a 2030 target deadline but it is becoming less and less likely that the agenda will be delivered in full, with the UN having previously reported backwards progress in several geographies on several goals due to the pandemic. SDSN is cautioning that while many European nations are seen as world leaders on the SDGs, the scale and pace of delivery are insufficient and risk getting worse. It has identified some \u201cacute\u201d challenges within the EU, including the fact that its agricultural system is exacerbating multiple social and environmental issues and is not equipped to deal with climate risks.<\/p>\n<p>SDSN is advocating for new stakeholder engagement mechanisms at the regional and national levels for effective policy implementation to transition to more sustainable, resilient food systems and safeguard the livelihoods of farmers in the process.
