The program has also resulted in improved hand hygiene practices.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency doctor Matthew Knox is as committed to saving the environment as he is to saving lives. Twelve months ago he championed a program at Wyong Hospital on the New South Wales Central Coast to discourage the unnecessary use of disposable gloves and improve hand hygiene among clinicians. &#8221;Fifty per cent of the time when gloves are used we don&#8217;t really need to be using them,&#8221; Dr Knox said. The program focused on educating staff to identify when proper hand hygiene was sufficient protection. &#8221;Examining somebody, intact skin to intact skin \u2014 there&#8217;s no risk there at all,&#8221; Dr Knox said.<\/p>\n<p>A year after the program was introduced disposable glove use in the emergency department has fallen by 285,000 to about 1.3 million single gloves per year. At the same time hand hygiene compliance has increased from 80 to 85 per cent. Dr Knox says he is proud of the result. According to NSW Health, the Australian health system produces seven per cent of the country&#8217;s carbon emissions, which is twice as much as the aviation sector.
