The 200MW\/400MWh Blackhillock site in Moray, Scotland, is now live, with a further 100MW scheduled to come online in 2026, making a total of 300MW\/600MWh. The total capacity of the site, said owner Zenob\u0113, is the equivalent of powering more than 3.1 million homes for two hours.<\/p>\n<p>The site has been deliberately located between Inverness and Aberdeen to address grid congestion from the Viking (443MW), Moray East (950MW) and Beatrice (588MW) offshore wind farms. \u201cIn addition to being Europe\u2019s largest battery, the Blackhillock site will be the first in the world to provide stability services to the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to make renewable power more secure and reliable,\u201d said Zenob\u0113 in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cW\u00e4rtsil\u00e4 is supplying its quantum energy storage system technology and GEMS digital energy platform with SMA grid forming inverters enabling a resilient power system with high power quality. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) delivered the grid connection required for the site to harness the renewable energy on its transmission network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EDF Energy will trade power from the battery energy storage system (BESS) using its Powershift platform. The BESS is being managed by the Kraken platform and the project marks a significant milestone for Kraken as it now manages 50% of the UK\u2019s grid-scale batteries, with a further 4.2GW contracted. Zenobe added that Blackhillock is expected to save consumers more than \u00a3170 million over the next 15 years and that it will also prevent approximately 2.6 million tonnes of CO\u2082 from entering the atmosphere during this period by integrating more wind power onto the transmission network.<\/p>\n<p>National Energy System Operator CEO Fintan Slye said: \u201cOur 2025 ambition to enable zero carbon operation of Great Britain\u2019s national electricity network is central to NESO\u2019s mission. \u201cThe delivery by Zenobe of this grid forming battery is a major accomplishment and brings us a step closer to this goal.
