The SFR is being extended to receive decommissioning waste from Swedish nuclear power plants. The current facility has been in operation since 1988 and is the final repository for short-lived low- and intermediate- level radioactive waste. The waste in SFR is from the medical sector, research and nuclear industry.<\/p>\n<p>It is situated 60m below the bottom of the Baltic Sea and comprises four 160m long rock vaults and a chamber in the bedrock with a 50m high concrete silo for the most radioactive waste. Two parallel kilometre-long access tunnels link the facility to the surface. The SFR holds approximately 63,000m3 of short-lived low- and medium-level operational waste. The new SFR extension will add an additional 117,000m3 of storage space, divided into various rock caverns.<\/p>\n<p>When the extension of SFR is complete, the facility will also accommodate waste from the decommissioning and dismantling of the Swedish nuclear power plants.
