The total includes both household waste and general waste from small businesses like shops and offices. The EU average was 511kg per person in 2023, the most recent Eurostat data shows, with significant differences between countries: Romania, generated just 303kg per person, Poland 367kg per person and Estonia 373kg. By contrast, the countries that generated the most waste per person are close to double that figure: 803kg per person in Austria, 802kg in Denmark and 712kg in Luxembourg.<\/p>\n<p>However, Luxembourg\u2019s Environment Ministry has said that the Eurostat methodology skews the country\u2019s figures, as it does not take account of the more than 200,000 cross-border workers who are not resident but spend a large part of the day in the Grand Duchy.<\/p>\n<p>Despite generating a large amount of waste, Luxembourg\u2019s recycling ratio is also high, with 401kg per person of municipal waste recycled in 2023, up from 285kg a decade earlier, according to Eurostat data. Luxembourg\u2019s recycling rate in 2023 was higher than that of France (224kg per person) and Belgium (378kg), but lower than Germany (410kg).
