The UK\u2019s plastic bag levy was first imposed on large retailers in October 2015 and set at 5p per bag. It increased to 10p in May 2021 and also expanded, at that point, to all retailers. However, it only applies for purchases made in-store, not online. This, DS Smith argues, is an outdated approach.<\/p>\n<p>DS Smith research found that online fashion retailers alone sent out almost a billion plastic bags directly to UK-based shoppers last year. With online shopping set to continue growing in popularity through to 2030, DS Smith estimates that online fashion retailers will deliver 6.9 billion plastic bags between 2025 and 2030 \u2013 more than three million each day.<\/p>\n<p>Across all types of retailers, the UK uses more plastic bags annually than any other European country. These bags cannot yet be recycled at kerbside in most UK regions; people must take them to dedicated recycling points hosted by retailers or local authorities. Recycling rates are, therefore, low.
