The average temperature over European land last month was 6.03\u00b0C &#8211; 2.41\u00b0C above the 1991-2020 average for March, according to Europe\u2019s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The data highlights \u201conce again\u201d how temperatures are continuing to break records, says Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at Copernicus\u2019s European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).<\/p>\n<p>Globally, the surface air temperature was 14.06\u00b0C &#8211; 0.65\u00b0C above the 1991-2020 average and 1.60\u00b0C above the pre-industrial level for March. This made March 2025 the 20th month in the last 21 months for which the temperature average was more than 1.5\u00b0C above the pre-industrial level &#8211; the threshold set by the Paris Agreement that the world is aiming not to surpass on a long-term basis.<\/p>\n<p>The most unusually warm temperatures were felt over eastern Europe and southwest Russia. Meanwhile, the Iberian Peninsula &#8211; Portugal, Spain and small parts of southern France &#8211; recorded colder-than-average temperatures. This region was also hit by a series of storms and saw widespread flooding.
