While 56% said they are already measuring and planning to manage the climate impact of their business travel, the remainder were not. The trend could well change soon; a significant minority of 46% of those polled said environmental sustainability was a top three priority in the design of their organisation\u2019s business travel policies.<\/p>\n<p>There is evidence that employee demand for sustainable options, along with the need to align with corporate climate targets and enhanced green regulation, is a driving factor. One-fifth of those polled said sustainability is the most important thing employees want from their business travel experience \u2013 around the same proportion as those citing \u2018simple expensing\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Around one-quarter of the survey participants (28%) said the main area of increased focus since 2020 was sustainability \u2013 which is marginally higher than the 25% who said the bigger focus was on cost saving. Two-thirds of those surveyed put cost saving in their top three priorities over the next 12 months. Four in ten rank it as their top priority.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the survey findings, Uber for Business\u2019s UK director Jenna Brown said: \u201cGiven the economic uncertainty affecting businesses around the world, it\u2019s unsurprising to see the cost of travel moving to the forefront of people\u2019s thinking. This is not to say that sustainability no longer matters. It is simply a reflection of the current turbulence in the global markets, which will naturally encourage decision makers to become more cautious and cost-orientated. Our data indicates that sustainability is still a leading consideration for both business travel policy makers and employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A separate poll of 250 business travellers in late 2024, also conducted by Uber For Business, found that 65% find it important to be able to book zero-emission vehicles. That proportion increases to 77% among senior executives. Uber itself recently unveiled a host of new initiatives to promote electric vehicle (EV) options to its riders in the UK, and to make EV adoption more affordable and accessible to drivers.<\/p>\n<p><em>A shared challenge on the road to decarbonising business<\/em><br \/>\nImplementing plans to cut emissions for business travel is a challenge for businesses across the globe and is not unique to the UK. Late last year, the Global Business Travel Association Foundation revealed that most businesses are not yet establishing carbon budgets for travel, or setting an internal carbon price. These are two key levers for driving changes to business travel policies with climate in mind.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Transport &amp; Environment (T&amp;E) has claimed that 44% of large multinationals in the US, Europe and India have no targets for reducing business travel emissions. T&amp;E\u2019s 25 top-flying companies with no emissions targets are responsible for 6.9 million tons of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to 48,000 single flights from Paris to New York, or 1.3 times the yearly aviation emissions of Belgium.
