Nuclear power is also seen by many as a clean electricity source that can help with Europe&#8217;s energy transition. Updating the PNIC was a key promise made by the Commission to the EU&#8217;s pro-nuclear countries. The most recent version was released eight years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The new Nuclear Illustrative Programme (PNIC) will try to \u201cstimulate action\u201d and \u201cfacilitate coordinated development\u201d of investments the EU nuclear sector, according to the Commission\u2019s call. The upcoming document will outline investment needs for the construction of new nuclear reactors and life extension for existing nuclear plants, the management of used fuels and radioactive waste, the development of new technologies like small modular reactors and fusion, and other issues such as workforce gaps.<\/p>\n<p>The paper is also an occasion to make a check up on various challenges facing Europe&#8217;s nuclear energy sector. Among the top concerns: supply chain vulnerabilities and the need to avoid future reliance \u201con any single or unreliable supplier\u201d. Russia in particular is a major concern. Despite the war in Ukraine, Russia remains an important supplier to EU countries of nuclear technologies and fuels.
