The trial scheme will last three months, and will reward consumers for recycling used cups at a number of major stores including Pret a Manger, McDonald\u2019s, Greggs, Caffe Nero and Costa Coffee. Funding for the scheme comes from a joint fund set up through the National Cup Recycling Scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Waste sorting app Bower is providing its world-first cup screening system for the initiative. The company\u2019s cup analysis uses photographic detection to let customers scan their cup returns and claim a 5p reward per cup. No bar codes or QR codes are needed. The AI object detection technology used by Bower was developed in collaboration with Google. The project will gather data for future use, with surveys created by Valpak, administrator of the National Cup Recycling Scheme, and Keep Wales Tidy. Bower will track demographic data and track usage of its recycling app, determining engagement with the new scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme tackles the continuing challenge of single-use cup recycling. Currently the UK disposes of around 2.5 billion paper cups every year, most often as litter or in a landfill. This is despite the majority of such cups being made of high-quality fibre, which can be recycled multiple times to biome cards or paper packaging. Polyethene lining can make recycling challenging. Valpak has stated that, in 2019, only 2.8% of the paper cups used in the UK were recycled, despite the recycling capacity being available.
