ESA said that adding expanded kerbside collections to existing council services could bring benefits of almost \u00a36bn over a decade as a result of increased recycling and reduced waste fires. The claims were based on research commissioned by Eunomia.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter countersigned by the leaders of the National Association of Waste Disposal Officers (NAWDO) and the British Metals Recycling Association, ESA chair Michael Topham pressed the Government to act for both economic and safety reasons. Fires related to incorrectly-discarded batteries and electrical devices were increasing 70% year-on-year, with the total cost now estimated at over \u00a31bn annually, the ESA added.<\/p>\n<p>With only a quarter of UK local authorities collecting this waste stream at kerbside, the report from environmental consultancy Eunomia examined the costs and benefits of different policy options for collections.
